25 Fast Activities

1.) Create trivia questions from the articles and play with partners, group or class.

2.) Imagine you are interviewing one of the people featured in Kids Avenue. Write questions you might ask them. Find a partner and role-play the interview answering each other's questions.

3.) Compare and contrast yourself with one of the people featured in Kids Avenue.

4.) Design a concept map of the information found in an article.

5.) Brainstorm what you know about an article before reading it.

6.) Using the cartoons, write a full story about what happened in the comic strip from the perspective of one of the characters.

7.) Write a letter to the editor...you can send it, too.

8.) In small groups, create an audiotape of one of the articles.

9.) Create a radio interview using one of the people featured in the magazine.

10.) Create your own illustrations and captions to go along with an article.

11.) Create and write a postcard from one of the places featured in Kids Avenue.

12.) Write questions and comments from an article for later discussion.

13.) Write an article similar to one of the topics found in the issue.

14.) Invent and write about a new version of something described in the magazine.

15.) Using someone featured in the magazine, answer the question, "What would it be like to be... (him/her)?

16.) Transform the information in an article to a different form (letter, diary, postcard, email, brochure, etc.)

17.) Photocopy an article, cut up the paragraphs and have students put them into a sensible (and hopefully correct) order.

18.) Use a map to find places described in the articles.

19.) Imagine there are no words in the cartoons. Using the same pictures, write an alternate comic strip that goes along with the pictures.

20.) Create your own comic strip from one of the articles.

21.) Find unknown words in the dictionary.

22.) Create a picture dictionary from the highlighted vocabulary words.

23.) Create a crossword puzzle, word find or other game using the highlighted vocabulary words. Exchange them with a partner.

24.) Write a review of Kids Avenue.

25.) Re-write one of the articles imagining you are writing from a different time or place.
